Nobody Gets Anywhere That Matters Alone
KariosV is officially a Construct Zero Business Champion, selected by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC).
I could write this newsletter as an announcement. But there’s a more honest, more useful story behind this moment: the self-made narrative — the one who arrived alone, who built it all from nothing, owing nobody anything — is one of the most popular and most incomplete stories in business. Not because the hard work is a lie, but because it erases the invisible infrastructure that made that work possible: the conversations that opened frameworks, the talent that trusted the model before it had any validation, and the environment that shaped judgement before that judgement had a name.
Identity isn’t born from locking yourself in a room and saying “I can do this alone.” It’s born from the friction between action and what the environment gives back.
Construct Zero is the Construction Leadership Council’s flagship initiative for decarbonising the built environment — the sector responsible for roughly 40% of the UK’s carbon emissions — in one of the most demanding regulatory markets in Europe.
Business Champions aren’t sponsors. They’re organisations selected to lead the sector’s transformation from the inside. Selection isn’t based on seniority or revenue — it’s based on judgement.
Engineering designed as a system
Our judgement starts from a simple idea:
Every undetected operational inefficiency is, in carbon terms, an event that has already happened — and whose cost can no longer be reversed.
That’s why we don’t deliver engineering as a one-off activity. Managed Engineering Units (MEU) are engineering designed as a system. And OmniTwin™ is perpetual auditing: it doesn’t wait for a project to finish to check whether there was waste — it audits itself in real time, as it happens.
Being selected as a Business Champion doesn’t certify our technology. It certifies that this approach has a seat at the table where the sector’s policy gets designed.
As our team puts it: thermodynamics doesn’t negotiate — and neither does judgement, when it’s real.
The accumulated result of an ecosystem
KariosV arrived at Construct Zero just over a year after being founded, operating in a foreign market, in another language, with a model that didn’t exist before. That speed wasn’t individual boldness. It was the accumulated result of an ecosystem:
- Nine years building Virwatt, my engineering firm in Venezuela — with a team, with partners, with clients who taught me what no manual can.
- A technical pool that bet on the model before it had any institutional validation.
- Conversations with executives that opened up perspective.
- A market that responded with enough signal to know the direction was right, even when the numbers hadn’t confirmed it yet.
- And people close to me — including the ones who didn’t understand what was being built — whose friction also shaped that judgement.
Being a Business Champion isn’t a reward for the past. It’s a responsibility toward the future: it means leading conversations, proving the model works at scale, and informing the policy the sector will eventually have to comply with.
The margin of anticipation
For anyone operating in construction and infrastructure across the UK and Europe, that translates into a concrete advantage: KariosV now operates from the room where standards are designed before they become regulation. We don’t just comply with them — we inform them. And that margin of anticipation is the difference between decisions made cheaply and decisions made under regulatory pressure.
The question that changed everything wasn’t “How do we better manage what already exists?” It was: “What would need to be true for most of these reactions to become unnecessary?” Construct Zero is validation that the question was the right one.
We read the world as it is, and design for the one that’s coming.
And as Jorge Mantilla, our emerging leader, puts it:
“From thermodynamics, not from slogans.”
